As the first round of the World Cup 2014 Soccer Tournament is almost coming to a close to make way and get ready for the “Knockout Round,” because I am a big fan of College Basketball and the NCAA Tournament, I personally prefer to call it the “Sweet Sixteen” of the World Cup 2014. Several teams have really surprised me and shown they can play the game very well and deserve to be where they are right now, the first team would be Mexico (aka: El Tri) as they call them are playing with a lot of force, strength and they are young players so the future of mens soccer in Mexico is looking very promising, I saw Mexico beat Croatia 3 to 1 and they were moving and passing the ball very well and played together as a team working hard to capture their goal which is win the World Cup what every soccer fan especially young soccer fans cheer for. The second team would be Brazil, I do not need to say anymore they are the hosting country and the home team so “home cooking” is of the essence some of their games might not finish with high scores but they are headed to the second round so it really does not matter. Finally, my third team is the United States, this World Cup 2014 I am totally with the play, talent and attitude that not only the players and coaches on Team USA have but also the fans of the United States which include myself they have come with the attitude that we are not going to be made fun off in regards to the United States Mens Soccer Program anymore we will show the world that Team USA has the talent and ability to win soccers most illustrious trophy the World Cup and I hope they do. I will be honest I had Spain winning the World Cup again but they have been eliminated even though I am disappointed I feel they did play very well and played with their heart for their country and people that is what the World Cup 2014 is all about playing your best and representing your country and your fellow citizens.
I was recently reading a past issue of Catholic San Francisco and I saw and noticed some great photographs and articles in there with wonderful volunteers and church members. The one thing that I noticed about the Catholic Church as well as the Catholic Faith is that the majority of the church membership is senior citizens and older adults, not a lot of youth, children or young adults which in my opinion is very bad for the Catholic Church in the present as well as in the future because if future generations do not come and join the church and discover the word of God the Catholic Church and the Catholic Faith might get neglected, abandoned and stop existing because of low membership and patronage and that would be a real travesty. What the Catholic Church needs to start doing is to open its doors, start brand new programs that will attract not only young adults but youth and children as well so that the Catholic Church and the Catholic Faith can get re-invigorated with new generations of church goers and/or parishioners to keep the word of God strong in the world. The Catholic Church needs to reach out to young adults, youth and children if it wants the Catholic Faith to continue to live and survive now and for future generations to come.
As the Summer season is upon us with everything it has to offer including the wonderfully hot sun, the trips to the beach to surf and play in the water, the picnics with hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad and of course the cold beverage that accompanies it, the children playing with the water just to stay cool and the Fourth of July Parade and Celebration that of course come with those fantastic Fireworks. This got me thinking about all the wonderful summer vacations that I spent in my hometown of Redwood City, California when I was a young boy some of these memories are priceless and will live in my mind eternally. I remember that on a typical summer day well at least during the week, I would wake up and get ready to go to a Summer youth program hosted and sponsored by a local church called “Church of Christ” which is now called “Redwood Church” on Madison Avenue. The activities included a morning sing along and a baseball game using a whiffle ball or plastic baseball, then their would be probably some activity like arts and crafts or sometimes we would walk to the park and go swimming that was really fun even though I went swimming everyday in the summer at the Sid Herkner Pool because it was free remember this is 1976 or 1977 and Redwood City was still growing as a city. The weekends were also fun for me because I remember every Saturday I would go with my favorite aunt to go grocery shopping for the week it was quite an interesting experience we would go to four different supermarkets including Continental Market which was located on Roosevelt Avenue, QFI which was located on Broadway Street, Canned Food which is now Grocery Outlet on Broadway Street and the last stop was La Azteca Market located on Chestnut Street near McDonald’s, I did this shopping trip with my aunt so many times that if she ever got sick and if then I would have been able to drive a car I would have been able to do the shopping trip by myself but thankfully that did not happen because it was always fun to go grocery shopping with her. Another great part of my Summer memories in Redwood City would always be the Fourth of July Parade in Downtown Redwood City with the floats, marching bands, clowns, carnival rides, festival and of course to cap off the night with those beautifully famous fireworks and the small fireworks that you were able to light up in front of your home before they passed the law that prohibits fireworks near homes because of the fear of forest fires and fires in general, in my opinion to this day the Fourth of July is the greatest holiday celebrated here in Redwood City by really great people. As the summer starts to wrap up by the middle of August, the football season is just around the corner and if you use to live in Redwood City you know that the San Francisco 49ers would open their Training Camp and Facility near Red Morton Park again this was many years ago but I remember getting many autographs including O.J. Simpson, “Hacksaw” Reynolds, Joe Montana, Dwight Clark, Fred Dean and coach Bill Walsh, The 49ers were and always will be the pride of Redwood City the five time Super Bowl Champions made their mark here no matter what time of the season it was. Redwood City is my hometown and I am happy to spend all those Summer vacations, all those wonderful memories and I would not ever change a thing.
Some time ago there was a tragic incident on the college campus of Santa Monica Community College and/or Santa Monica Junior College, Santa Monica, California on June 7, 2013 in which a gunman was shooting cars and buses before he headed to the Southern California educational institution and began shooting at several students in the library before Police and local authorities fatally shot him this after he shot both his father and brother at their house while setting it on fire. There is also the April 19, 2013 incident on the campus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where the two “Boston Marathon Bombers, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev shot multiple times and killed Campus Police Officer, Sean Collier who was responding to the incident he was only 26 years old. What about the December 14, 2012 shooting tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut where gunman, Adam Lanza shot and killed 27 innocent victims many of them young innocent children until he shot and took his own life. I can go on giving you more incidents and tragedies that have taken place in the United States but I think you get my point. The problem is not with guns and/or weapons specifically it is with the people that carry the guns and/or weapons and intend to use it for harm and dangerous acts for whatever unknown reason or unknown message that they want to spread by hurting and killing innocent people to get the negative attention that they feed on. The way we as a society can help with the danger of Gun control and weapons control in general is to give Law-abiding citizens a gun to help protect and defend themselves and maybe others against a dangerous person or a terrorist that they might be encountering because at this moment the bad people have all the guns and weapons that if used improperly can hurt and kill more innocent victims, we need some good people to carry a gun and/or weapon to stop terrorist and dangerous criminal acts as well as to prevent the unnecessary injury and death of more innocent victims. I strongly and firmly believe that the United States as a country needs to look at this problem very seriously or tragedies and incidents will just keep continuing.
A few days ago, I was reading this news story in a local newspaper and it was a story about a young girl in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who got bullied and ridiculed from her high school Geometry teacher for wearing a pink colored support “Romney-Ryan 2012” campaign t-shirt there was nothing rude, indecent or dirty about it, it was just a regular t-shirt with the “Romney-Ryan 2012” campaign logo on it. The high school instructor yelled and screamed at the young lady to get out of her classroom and change clothing while at the same time making such ridiculous and idiotic remarks like comparing Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to the Klu Klux Klan, sorry I do not see any connection or collaboration there. The young lady did not budge or move at all and stood her ground it is her God given right to freedom of expression and no one and I strongly repeat no one has any right to tell you and/or force you to think differently. The father of this sixteen year old high school student is filing a formal protest and both he and his daughter want the high school geometry teacher fired for such immature and bullied behavior, in my point of view I hope that teacher does get fired we do not immature teachers and/or instructors that do not accept the freedom of expression from people in general but especially from young people. We need teacher and instructors that are open-minded and also listen, respect and accept different thoughts and points of view we all do not have to think the same way as well we do not have to look the same way. The high school geometry teacher when confronted by school officials about her immature and sporatic behavior just said “This was just a joke and I meant nothing by it” that is a line that every immature bully uses. My message to the immature high school geometry teacher would be this; grow up and stop pushing and bullying people because of the clothes they wear the joking and bullying are over. I think this should be a universal message leave people alone with the clothes they are wearing if they want to wear Obama-Biden 2012 campaign clothing attire or Romney-Ryan 2012 campaign clothing attire it is their right in this beautiful country of ours to do so and they can wearing their selected clothing attire with my blessing.
I for one thought that United States President, Barack Obama plan for reforming the overall Health Care System or as it was called “Obamacare” was going to be something different and something cheaper than what we currently have as a Healthcare system now. Wow, was I ever wrong, Obamacare which just happen to pass through the United States Congress and just barely got by the United States Senate is going to cost the American taxpayers more money than expected and as an unfortunate result the taxes of all the citizens in the United States are going to be raised and go up in order to make and force all Americans to pay for a Healthcare system that does not appear to be working properly and that has little or no support from not only health insurance companies and/or plans or as they are called HMO’s, from many Medical Doctors, Hospitals and/or clinics but by also many Americans do not trust the new Obamacare Health Plan System and the raising of fees and taxes to pay for a healthcare system that appears to be doomed for failure. In my point of view, I think President Obama needs to strongly concentrate on creating more jobs and/or employment in this country so the United States Economy can get in better shape than what it currently is right now. I know and understand that it is still a little early before the 2012 United States Presidential Election but it now formally appears that the entire country is fed-up and tired with the lack of Leadership and broken promises of Barack Obama so in other words this is probably going to be President Obama’s last act in office and it appears the people of the United States and/or the American Voter are ready for some fresh new Leadership in Mitt Romney and I have said this before and I will say it again, the Republicans need to make sure that three items must be faced when they get in the White House, Jobs, the Economy and bring back all our United States military from those battles that some we really should not be in, without any hesitation our country must continue and move forward with new and renewed leadership. I do understand that we do need to tighten our financial belt and save money but we should continue to keep and maintain our system of Democracy and Capitalism because that is how we became the great nation that we are today.
